HOW HURRICANE SANDY HAS AFFECTED OUR NATION
This week I decided to write about the storms for hurricane
Sandy. I got my information from http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2012/11/08/snow-noreaster-storm-east-coast-snow/1691259/.
It is said that there are 4.7 inches of snow in Central Park. With gusts of
wind as much as 54 miles per hours, the storm brought 12 inches of snow to
Connecticut and the Jersey Shore. Places such as Connecticut and Rhode Island
got hit with 3 to 6 inches of snow. Worcester, Massachusetts had a total of 8
inches of snow. Central Park’s total is already on record for one of the
snowiest Novembers. There are tons of power outages and 11,000 more were
recorded to be without power on Wednesday, raising the total for New York to
75,000 without power. Many schools are closed and delayed. It is going to be difficult for all these
families. Tons of houses and land has been destroyed. People are shivering and
freezing with all the power outages and the cold weather. Some of the highlights with this weather
are: Sandy knocked out power to many on
the East Coast, there was snow added to the bad weather in the North Eastern,
and many flights were cancelled. In New York City many policemen went to
neighborhoods trying to get residents to evacuate. The mayor didn’t issue any
mandatory evacuation. Many people stayed behind because they worried about
looting and others stayed behind because they didn’t think anything worse could
happen to what they have already gone through.
In Long Beach, New York, the 21,000 people who decided to stay behind
from earlier evacuation requests were told again to leave the city. All
construction in New York was put on hold. Last week a crane collapsed. Parks
were closed because the fear of trees falling. It was suggested to drivers that
they stay off the road after 5p.m. because of icing. This storm hit 2 days ago
and already killed 100 people in 10 states, most of these victims lived in New
York or New Jersey. On Thursday over
292,700 homes were without power and another 403,000 in New Jersey were without
power. Also another problem with this
hurricane is that Broadway has been losing money. Another thing hurricane Sandy
caused was the killing of an endangered species of turtles, the Loggerhead
turtles. There were at least 50 nests of turtles destroyed in Florida’s Juno
Beach when the hurricane struck. In North Carolina there were 12 turtle nests
destroyed, 50 hatchlings were rescued. Another important thing that might have
been caused by hurricane Sandy could have been the presidential election. It is
said that some people’s decision on who to elect could have been affected by
the reaction of the candidates to the hurricane. Two thirds of the voters for
this reason backed up Obama. So the
question is, were they going to vote for Romney but they got swayed to vote for
Obama because of the way he reacted. 15% of people said that this was the most important
factor in their decision to vote. This information was found at http://video.foxnews.com/v/1954108669001/how-did-hurricane-sandy-impact-the-election.
Well, all these horrible things show us that God is in control and He can help
our nation and everybody through this rough time. We just need to pray that He
will help with this tragedy and be with all the suffering people.
